Did you get a watch today? Here’s my number one tip.
Main Post:
From someone who’s been wearing one since 2015, here’s my number one tip for new Watch owners: go to the Watch app on your phone, open the section where it lists the notification settings for all your apps, and shut off everything. Then, selectively turn on only the notifications you really care about, e.g. Messages. Everything else will be waiting for you on your phone. If you mirror every notification from your phone, it’s quite annoying and overwhelming, and you quickly learn to ignore the taps when they happen.
Also, if you’re a city commuter, make sure you turn on express transit mode. Have fun!
Top Comment: I’ve been sharing this tip in “new watch” threads for a couple of weeks and getting a good reception, so I figured it might make a good post of its own on Christmas. P.S. Three bonus tips. Apple Pay is the best feature of the watch. Much better than on the phone, particularly in 2024 when it no longer feels dorky. Still get a “whoa” from a cashier occasionally. In the last last 5+ years I’ve only used knockoff bands from AliExpress/Amazon and they are fine. Apple is great, but $50-100 for 12‘‘ of nylon is too much. On Ali search “1:1” for the closest matches, otherwise you’ll find weird design differences, like strange extra fasteners on the loop-style bands. Don’t use a case. Cases trap dirt and cause the scratches you are trying to avoid. And the Watch isn't a phone, it can take a beating. I've always worn a naked watch and never had a problem. Scratches are part of the journey, like fades on denim, and you’ll get over them fast. Edit: Wow, thanks for the great response to this post! I’ll throw in one more: you can use your watch to quickly find your misplaced iPhone when in Bluetooth range. Hit the side button (not the crown) to bring up the control center, then find the onscreen button that looks like a ringing iPhone. Tap this and your phone will make a noise. Hold it and your phone will light up. Super useful.
